Mom, Dad--I need cash! -- [View All Articles]

Something that parents across Washington County are sure to hear from their children are those three little words, "I need cash."  Like us, our children are probably feeling strapped for cash as they struggle to stretch their money to buy necessities and still have some cash left over to take in a movie or grab a snack with friends.

Turn what could be a frustrating and reoccurring situation into a teachable moment with youth.  The next time your child asks for money, tell them, "Sure, you can have some money...but you'll have to earn it."  Decide on a few age appropriate tasks, and then ask your child for a written proposal outlining in detail the service they will provide. Use their need for cash as a means to relieve some of the stress on you by having them wrap presents, shovel snow or take down Christmas decorations & lights after the holidays.  Once you've negotiated a price for their labor, let them know that the job must be done with excellence if they expect to be paid. You can even ask them to provide you with an invoice after the job is completed. It's what they'll have to do in the business world, so why not teach them now?

The Youth Attraction Pillar will be looking to provide even more teachable moments for Washington County youth in 2010.  The Youth Attraction Pillar has two primary objectives:

1.    Promote entrepreneurship as a viable career option for youth and a long term strategy for supporting the growth of our economy and community.

2.    Create opportunities to attract youth/young adults to our community while also retaining the youth/young adults of our community.

WCHTC, Youth First of Washington County and the Chamber of Commerce were proud to collaborate this year to introduce a new award for Washington County youth.  At the 2009 annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, Aaron Johnson, a high school junior, was recognized as an Emerging Entrepreneur in Washington County for starting his own business.

In 2010, look for an EntrepreneurShip Investigation (ESI) Camp, career mentoring, InTEENship opportunities with local businesses, high school Youth Summit and a Youth Entrepreneurship Fair.

 Always open to your suggestions . . . . .
