WCHTC & AWC announce Leadership for Public Servants Workshop

The community spoke and The Washington County Hometown Competitiveness Leadership Pillar listened.

One of the most striking survey results, and one which was repeated at our academy and other public meetings, was that the community expected more of our political leaders. Local respondents said they expected our leaders to act not on their own agendas, but in ways that would serve the greater good of the community.

In order to help political leaders and those interested in running for political office, WCHTC, in connection with Awareness Washington County, will offer a short course in Leadership for Public Servants.

The course will meet once a week for four weeks. AWC staff and guest facilitators will conduct the leadership training sessions. Several sessions will feature interactive panel discussions and addresses by current local and state office holders. Dinner will be provided at each session.

The course will offer a combination of servant leadership, filing and financial information, and campaign strategy. Topics to be covered include:

· self analysis
· what it means to be a candidate and a public official
· campaign finance reports
· working with the media
· forming a campaign committee
· running your campaign
· communicating with and being responsive to citizens
· public policy formation
· ethical conduct for candidates and office holders
· city/county/state issues and how to research ballot issues

Other topics may be added. Washington County HTC is applying for a grant from OCRA to cover some of the costs of the leadership training.
